Have you ever done something in your life that makes you feel great each time you do it? Something that not only helps others but makes you a better person in the process? That is what ABA does for me. I love this field and I work hard each day so that I can help children and their families achieve goals that they maybe never thought were possible. I have worked in this field for almost 5 years. Throughout that time I’ve worked with many types of clients and on many different skills. With that being said, I think I have two areas that perhaps stand out to me.
I began my career working with children ages 7-15 on social skills in a small clinic in Minnesota. I led an after school program that targeted communication and social interaction skills. After working in that program for 3 years, I saw so many of my clients grow into confident kids that felt comfortable going to school each day, playing with friends at recess, and being able to tolerate things not going their way. It was an eye-opening experience knowing that I helped make that happen. These kids and the skills that I helped teach them are the reason I pursued ABA and decided to enroll in graduate school to become a BCBA. With that being said, teaching children social skills will always hold a special place in my heart.
The second area I have a great deal of passion for is teaching children functional communication. I cannot even wager a guess as to how many kids I’ve worked with over the years in which one of their main goals was increasing functional communication; whether that be with sign language, PECS, an AAC device, or vocal language. Seeing a child go from virtually no communication skills to adequate or even excellent communication skills is so incredibly rewarding. And even more rewarding than that is seeing how happy each parent is when their child is able to communicate their wants and needs effectively. It’s a feeling I might never be able to fully describe. Everyone has areas and skills that they love working on; social skills and functional communication are just a few of mine.
