Smiley Pies
A small treat, perfect for small hands, practicing more advanced fine motor skills, and a little bit of patience! Ingredients:
Store-bought pie crust
3 apples
2 tbsp butter
1/3 cup brown sugar
1 tsp cinnamon
1/4 tsp vanilla extract
Salt
Egg
1 tbsp milk Instructions:
Lay out your pie dough and use a rolling pin to lightly roll each of them out. This will loosen the premade dough a bit to make it easier to shape later.
Using a cookie cutter, cut circles out of your sheets of pie dough. Reroll the remaining dough and cut small eyes and mouths to form the faces of your pies. Place in the refrigerator.
Help your kiddo peel and chop the apples into bite-sized pieces before adding them to a saucepan over medium-low heat.
Stir the apples for about 2 minutes. Then mix in your butter, brown sugar, cinnamon, vanilla extract, and a pinch of salt.
Stir and allow your filling to come to a simmer. Simmer for 2 minutes, and then remove it from the heat. Set aside and allow it to cool for 30 minutes.
Preheat your oven to 375 degrees and prepare a baking sheet with parchment paper.
Remove your pie dough circles from the refrigerator and place half of them on the baking sheet. These will be the bottoms of your pies.
Assist your kiddo in cutting small vents into the remaining circles, which will serve as the tops of your pies. You can add the vents in the middle to form the noses of your pie faces.
Once your filling is cool, spoon 2 tablespoons into your pie bottoms. Make sure the edges are clear of filling so you can seal your pies. If there’s more room, feel free to add it bit more filling.
Place the top piece of dough over the filling. This may require a little bit of stretching. Once the edges meet, use a fork to seal the pies by pressing the edges together lightly.
In a small bowl, mix together 1 tablespoon of milk and a whole egg. Using a brush, brush the tops of all your pies lightly. Then add your pie eyes and mouths on each pie. Brush the eyes and mouths with the mixture again.
Bake for 25-30 minutes, until the crusts of the pies are golden brown. Then remove from the oven and allow to cool before enjoying!Download Now!
