Attending A Birthday Party

Help autistic children prepare for birthday parties with this social story covering gift-giving, party activities, sensory needs, and social expectations.

Attending a Birthday Party
I was invited to a birthday party!
A birthday party is where we celebrate the person whose birthday it is.
Before we go to the party, we need to pick out a gift for the birthday person.
Their gift should be something they would like, even if I wouldn't like it for myself.
When we arrive, we can either put our gift with the other gifts or give it to the birthday person.
The gifts at the party are not for the other guests or me.
The birthday person will open their gifts when they are ready to see them all.
There is a lot to see and do at birthday parties, like:
Games to play
Fun decorations
Snacks to eat
Music playing If the party is too loud, I can ask for my headphones so I can feel more comfortable.
When it’s time to sing “Happy Birthday”, everyone will gather around the birthday person standing in front of the cake.
After we finish singing, the birthday person will blow out the candles, and everyone will clap.
Once we eat cake and finish the other activities, it’s time to say goodbye to the birthday person and head home.
Birthday parties are so much fun, and each one is a little bit different!Download Now!
