Groundhog Day

Our Groundhog Day social story helps kids learn about this fun tradition, what it means, and why we celebrate it — all in a simple, easy-to-understand way.

Groundhog Day During the middle of winter, we celebrate this fun tradition called Groundhog Day.
On February 2nd each year, we wait for a groundhog named Punxsutawney Phil to check out the weather.
Phil lives in Pennsylvania, and his job is to “predict” the start of spring.
On Groundhog Day, we all watch as Phil comes out of his burrow at sunrise.
If it's a sunny day and he sees his shadow on the ground, he will run back into his burrow.
Seeing this shadow means there will be six more weeks of winter.
If it’s a cloudy day and Phil doesn’t see his shadow, he will stay out of his burrow for a while.
Since he didn’t see his shadow, spring will be coming soon.
While this silly tradition is fun to enjoy each year, it’s important to remember Phil can’t really predict the weather.
So even if he doesn’t see his shadow, we may still need our winter coats for many more weeks.Download Now!
