Getting a Haircut

Our “Getting a Haircut” Social Story helps prepare learners for what to expect at the salon or barbershop. With clear steps and visuals, it supports comfort, understanding, and confidence.

Getting a Haircut It’s time for me to get a haircut.
I need a haircut whenever my hair gets too long.
To get my haircut, I might go to a salon or a barber.
When I arrive at the salon, I will wait until they call my name.
The person cutting my hair is called a hairstylist.
The hairstylist will show me to their special chair at their station.
The chair moves up and down, allowing them to comfortably cut my hair.
They will put a big drape in front of me to keep the hair they cut from getting on my clothes.
The stylist will have some tools they use to cut and style my hair, like:
combs
scissors
trimmers
hair dryers
spray bottles
To cut my hair, they will need to brush it out, which shows where they will need to cut and how much.
The sound of the hair dryers and the trimmers in the salon might be a little loud, but they are just tools used to help make my hair look neat.
When they cut my hair, it’s important to stay still so they can do a good job.
If I need a break from cutting my hair, I can ask for one. I can also take a toy with me to cut my hair.
